Training

Section 89-n of the General Business Law of New York State provides for various exemptions and/or waivers of training based on previous Municipal Police Training Council approved law enforcement training.

The Security Guard Act of 1992 mandates the training and registration of security guards and the approval of private security training schools. The Act also requires that certain private security training must be approved and that all private security trainers must be certified. The Division of Criminal Justice Services, Office of Public Safety provides administrative oversight for private security training in New York State. The New York State Department of State, Division of Licensing Services has oversight responsibility for the registration of all security guards.

8 Hours Pre-Assignment Training Course for Security Guards

This is an 8 hour course required by New York State as the first step in obtaining a security guard registration card from the New York State Department of State. The course provides the student with a general overview of the duties and responsibilities of a security guard.

8 Hours Annual In-Service Training Course for Security Guards

This is an 8 hour course that must be completed within 12 calendar months from completion of the 16 Hour On-the-Job Training Course for Security Guards, and annually thereafter. The course is structured to provide the student with updated and enhanced information on the duties and responsibilities of a security guard.

16 Hours On The Job Training Course for Security Guards

This is a 16 hour course that must be completed within 90 days of employment as a security guard. The course provides the student with detailed information on the duties and responsibilities of a security guard.

47 Hours Firearm Training Course for Security Guards

The DCJS 47 Hour Firearms Training Course for Armed Security Guards is mandated for all armed security guards in New York State and is the only one authorized for such training. The security guard school must use this curriculum in its entirety when providing mandated firearms training pursuant to General Business Law Article 7-A, section 89-n and New York State Compilation of Codes, Rules and Regulations (NYCRR) Title 9, Part 6027.5.
There are two distinct components of instruction in the 47 Hour Firearms Training Course for Armed Security Guards:
Component 1 – Seven (7) hour Article 35 – Use of Force/Deadly Physical Force. Only individuals who have met the requirements for security guard instructor certification or who have been certified to instruct Use of Force/Deadly Physical Force may teach this component of training.
Component 2 – Forty (40) hour Range Instruction and Qualification. Only individuals who have met the requirements for armed security guard instructor certification in accordance with the provisions of Title 9 of the Official Compilation of Codes, Rules and Regulations of the State of New York, Part 6029, may instruct this component of training. This applies to all instructors regardless of certification in other areas, including police instructors.

Handcuff Training Course

Handcuff Training Course

Executive Investigation & Security, Ltd. offers a Handcuffing course that will teach students how to safely apply and remove handcuffs. In addition this course will instruct each students on proper pat-down and search for weapons. The course is taught by a certified PATH instructor and is an excellent course for new security officers.
